  • What Does a Child Advocate Do?

    CASA Advocates get to know the children, review records, research information, and talk to everyone involved in a child’s life, social workers and attorneys, parents and teachers, doctors and relatives. Advocates provide the judge with recommendations to help them decide on needed services and the best permanent home for the children.

    The ultimate goal is to help ensure that each child has a safe, permanent home where they can thrive. Sometimes, that means children reunite with their parents or other relatives, while other children may be adopted.

    A CASA Advocate may be the one steady, constant, and trusted adult in a child’s life during a frightening and confusing time. Volunteering to be an Advocate means you will make a critical impact on the life of a child.

    The role of the Advocate is:

    • To be a connector for a child in foster care, keeping siblings in touch, seeking out relatives, supporting community, and building social networks;
    • To be a fact-finder for the judge;
    • To share the child’s wishes in court, while also speaking up for the child's best interest;
    • To ensure a child’s needs are met throughout the length of the case, advocating for educational supports, therapies, and physical health services; and
    • To simply show up. For children who feel lonely and lost in the system, simply having a caring adult show up for birthdays, celebrations, school functions, or just for a visit to the park, can be vital. Our kids tell us this is the most important part of having a CASA Advocate!
  • Is There a Difference Between an "Advocate" and "Volunteer"?

    While around 90 percent of CASA Advocates are volunteers, CASA also has a team of expert Staff Advocates to serve approximately 10 percent of children whose cases are the most complicated.

  • What is the Level of Commitment I Should Expect as a CASA Advocate?

    • We ask every volunteer to commit to the duration of a case, which is a minimum of 12 months.
    • Complete new volunteer training.
    • Visit child/children at least once per month, and complete various other visits and tasks that take an average of 15-18 hours per month. Many of these tasks can be completed on your schedule!
    • Maintain confidentiality at all times.
  • What Are the Requirements to Become an Advocate?

    • Be at least 21 years old
    • Have a valid Texas driver's license
    • Have access to a vehicle and proof of insurance
    • Complete criminal and CPS background checks
    • Must be able to read, write, and speak English

    *No previous experience or education is required. All training and support provided.

  • ¿Qué hace un Defensor de Menores?

    Los defensores de CASA llegan a conocer a los menores, revisan los registros, investigan información y hablan con todos los involucrados en la vida de un niño como trabajadores sociales y abogados, padres y maestros, médicos y familiares. Los defensores brindan al juez recomendaciones para ayudarlos a decidir los servicios necesarios y el mejor hogar permanente para los niños.

    El objetivo final es ayudar a garantizar que cada menor tenga un hogar seguro y permanente donde pueda prosperar. A veces, eso significa que algunos menores se reúnen con sus padres u otros familiares, mientras que a algunos otros menores los adopten.

    Un Defensor de CASA puede ser el único adulto estable, constante y de confianza en la vida de un niño durante un momento aterrador y confuso. Participar como voluntario para ser un Defensor significa que usted tendrá un impacto crítico en la vida de un niño.

    El rol del Defensor es:

    • Actuar como enlace para un niño en cuidado de crianza, mantener a los hermanos en contacto, buscar parientes, apoyar a la comunidad y construir redes sociales;
    • Ser un investigador de hechos para el juez;
    • Expresar los deseos del menor en el tribunal y a la vez defender los intereses superiores del menor;
    • Asegurar que las necesidades del menor se satisfagan a lo largo del caso, y abogar por apoyos educativos, terapias y servicios de salud física; y
    • Simplemente estar presente. Para los niños que se sienten solos y perdidos en el sistema, el simple hecho de tener a un adulto compasivo que esté presente para cumpleaños, celebraciones, funciones escolares o simplemente para una visita al parque, puede ser vital. ¡Nuestros hijos nos dicen que esta es la parte más importante de tener un Defensor de CASA!

    • Debe poder leer, escribir y hablar inglés.

    *No se requiere experiencia o educación previa. Se le proporciona toda la capacitación y el apoyo necesario.
