Leave a Legacy

You can create a legacy of hope for vulnerable children by making a planned gift to Child Advocates San Antonio. A planned gift, such as a bequest in your will or trust, life insurance designations or gifts of appreciated property, ensures your support for the children we serve well into the future.

There are many ways to make a legacy gift to Child Advocates San Antonio, including gifts you can make today, gifts that make an impact after your lifetime, and gifts that pay you income. CASA will be honored to work with you and your advisors to explore different options for planned gifts. Please let us know if you have named Child Advocates San Antonio in your estate.

Preferred Bequest Language

One of the most common ways to make a legacy gift is a bequest through your will. Adding a bequest to your will or living trust can be as simple as adding a single sentence. If you are considering making a gift by bequest, please discuss potential impacts with your attorney and advisors. Below is sample language that can be used for this purpose.

“I give the sum of $____ or ____% to Child Advocates San Antonio (CASA) at 1956 S WW White Rd, San Antonio TX 78222 (tax ID: 74-2494625) to be used for the furtherance of its charitable purposes in the discretion and at the direction of its Board of Directors for its unrestricted use and purpose.”

Give Stocks or other Securities

Using investments to support children in foster care through Child Advocates San Antonio

IRA Qualified Charitable Distributions

If you are 71 years or older, you can make your gift to Child Advocates San Antonio with a distribution from your IRA. These transfers, known as qualified charitable distributions or QCDs, offer eligible older Americans a great way to easily give to charity before the end of the year. Normally, distributions from a traditional individual retirement arrangement (IRA) are taxable when received. With a QCD, however, these distributions become tax-free as long as they're paid directly from the IRA to an eligible charitable organization. Just ask your IRA administrator to send funds directly to Child Advocates San Antonio from your account – and be sure to let us know, so we can watch for it!

While you will not receive a charitable deduction, the amount donated will not be added to your taxable income – and if you are at least 72, it will count toward any Required Minimum Distribution you must take.

Direct Stock or Securities Donation

Regardless of your age, if you own publicly traded stock, bonds or mutual funds, you can donate them directly to Child Advocates San Antonio. This can be especially beneficial if you have stock that has increased in value significantly since you acquired it. A stock donation to Child Advocates San Antonio will be valued as a charitable contribution for the full market value as of the date of donation. You will not be taxed on the increase in the value of the stock since you acquired it. It is CASA’s policy to sell donated stock immediately.

Charitable Brokerage Accounts or Donor-Advised Funds

A Donor Advised Fund is like a charitable savings account that gives you the flexibility to recommend how much you give to Child Advocates San Antonio and other qualified charities. You can recommend a grant or recurring grants now to make an immediate impact or use your fund as a tool for future giving.

Many brokerage firms allow you to create a charitable account that you can donate stock to, and once you fund the account, you can request a grant distribution to Child Advocates San Antonio (or other tax-deductible charity). This can give you the flexibility to recommend how much you give to Child Advocates San Antonio and other qualified charities through immediate, recurring, or future grants. Because your broker manages the transfer of the stock from your regular account into your charitable account, this can be a convenient way to convert appreciated stock into funds you can make available to non-profits, while receiving the same tax benefit as direct stock donation.

It can also allow you to make one stock donation and direct the proceeds to be provided to multiple recipients, or to one or more recipients at a later time.

You can also create a lasting legacy by naming Child Advocates San Antonio as the beneficiary of the entire account or a percentage of the account. Contact your fund administrator for more information on your options.
