| Second Annual Breakfast of Champions Raises $143,000 for CASA |

More than 300 people attended CASA’s Second Annual Breakfast of Champions on Wednesday, May 12, 2010. Nearly 160 individuals made pledges and donations at the event which generated $143,000 in funding for CASA. Twenty individuals joined the Champions of Hope Society – each pledging $1,000 a year for five years to CASA. Guests were challenged by Wayne Wright Lawyers which matched the first $3,000 donated at the breakfast.

About 200 people gathered Monday on the steps of the Bexar County Courthouse to proclaim one ringing message through blue plastic megaphones: Stop child abuse now. Texas CASA, or Court Appointed Special Advocates, put on the event designed to raise awareness during April, which is Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness Month. Trained CASA volunteers are paired with children who have been removed from home because of abuse or neglect and placed in the foster-care system. The volunteers act as advocates and investigate cases to help judges determine what is in the child's best interest. |

There have been tragic stories in the news about children who have fallen prey to horrific abuse or suffered from neglect at the hands of those who are supposed to love and protect them. There are many more children whose stories are untold and who will live in the shadows of abuse until someone gives them a voice. That voice can come in many different forms ; a teacher, doctor, your next-door neighbor, maybe even you. It only takes one.
